Frescos of the cold church

Probably the frescos in Prechisty Bor were made by the painters of Tver icon-painting school (of late period) which existed in Tver about one hundred years ago (the end of 18th – the end of 20th century) but we know very little about it now. One can hardly find similar frescos anywhere. There are very few of them (several churches in Tver and Kalininsky region).

The Frescos of the church in Prechisty Bor (about 1848) are painted in mixed technique, mostly like frescos, that’s why plaster and colors partly survived careless treatment in Soviet period and long influence of weather.

On the western wall there is a large composition of depicting Golgotha with the scene of preparation for the crucifixion. When collective farmers broke the western embrasure in order to pull a winnowing machine into the church, a big crack appeared on “Golgotha” and it is seen now. Two compositions on each wall are situated between the windows of the second light. They are well preserved: ”Cain and Avel”, “Brothers selling Josef to slavery”, “Samson tearing the lion”, “Beheading of John the Baptist” ( the other plots are not seen)

The compositions have frames one-colored vegetable ornament. On the cupola the paintings didn’t survive. A small fragment (vegetable ornament) is kept on the northern wall where it was included in the refectory.
